FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

69th Annual WHAS Crusade for Children raises $5,133,684.69
Communities in Kentucky and southern Indiana came together once again for the 69th Annual WHAS Crusade for Children to make life better for children with special needs. The final tote board tallied $5,133,684.69 as Americaās most successful local telethon concluded with the traditional singing of āGod Bless Americaā just before 7:00pm (EDT) Sunday, June 5, 2022. Since 1954, the Crusade has now raised a cumulative total of more than $205 million.
This yearās telethon featured live performances on the Variety Show on Saturday, June 4. The show was hosted by WHAS11ās Shay McAlister and 840 WHAS Radioās Terry Meiners. They were joined by Patrick Henry Hughes, magician David Garrard, American Idol contestant Jackson Snelling of Austin, IN, and The Southern Sirens. There were additional recorded performances from The Miracle Dancers, The Diane Moore Dancers, Magician Lance Burton, Hazel Miller and the Collective, Sweet Harmony, Michelle Sydnor and Friends, Ricky Beavers, and American Idol contestant Layla Spring of Marion County, KY.
āIt is heartwarming to see the people of Kentuckiana step up once again to make life better for children with special needs. A huge thank you to all who gave, the firefighters who worked tirelessly to collect, and the dedicated volunteers that help every year. After another tough year, this kind of generosity will make a very real difference in the lives of so many children,ā said WHAS Crusade for Children President & CEO Dawn Lee.
More than $205 million for the kids
In its first 69 years, the Crusade has raised more than $205 million for children with special needs. One hundred percent of all donations raised Crusade weekend are returned in the form of grants to agencies, schools and hospitals that make life better for children with special needs in Kentucky and southern Indiana.
It takes a cast of thousands for this annual miracle, from individual donors dropping pocket change into boots at firefighter roadblocks to children hosting lemonade stands to corporations offering payroll deduction.
The Leaders
Nearly 60 percent of donations are collected by nearly 200 fire departments in Kentucky and southern Indiana. Fire departments have been involved with the Crusade since 1956 when Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Chief Ernie Bohler brought $400 on the Memorial Auditorium stage in Louisville and challenged all fire departments to get involved.
Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Protection District led the way for the Kentucky fire departments with $156,175.94.
The top Indiana fire department was Lafayette Township Fire Department with $92,777.31.
LG&E and KU Foundation led the community organizations with $398,104.00 in contributions.
So many to thank
The annual Crusade Internet/radio/telethon kicked off at 1:00pm (EDT) on Saturday, June 4 and aired in its entirety on 840 WHAS Radio, WHAS11 and worldwide on WHAS11.com. WHAS11 also simulcast the Crusade weekend program on YouTube Live. Updates were posted all weekend long on WHASCrusade.org, and donors across the country made donations.
In addition, WBNA-TV 21.1 in Louisville aired live broadcasts 12:30pm to 6:30pm Sunday, June 5, from the Kentucky cities of Elizabethtown, Shelbyville and Bardstown. WBKO-TV in Bowling Green aired remote telecasts from Campbellsville on Saturday and Leitchfield on Sunday.

About the WHAS Crusade for Children
The WHAS Crusade for Children, established by WHAS-TV in 1954, raises money for schools, agencies and hospitals that make life better for children with special needs. In its first 69 years, the Crusade has raised more than $205 million. Thanks to generous contributions of goods and services, the Crusade returns 100 percent of all donations to organizations in all 120 Kentucky counties and more than 50 southern Indiana counties. Fire departments raise nearly 60 percent of the money each year by staging road blocks and other events.
Millions of children have been helped by the Crusade since 1954. The WHAS Crusade for Children, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public charity. Gifts are tax-deductible as permitted by law.
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to another member of the Crusade family. For twenty years, Wayne Perkey was the face of the WHAS Crusade for Children. In 1980, he became only the second person to be chosen to emcee the telethon, an honor that he respected and cherished. Hereās Wayneās story told to you in his own words⦠of his love and dedication to the WHAS Crusade for Children and the children with special needs that are helped every year.
Wayne continued to be involved by hosting on Sunday mornings of the telethon weekend. He most recently helped kick things off this past Crusade Sunday for the 68th WHAS Crusade for Children telethon in 2021. A clip of that appearance is featured at the end of this tribute.
The family has requested that donations and expressions of sympathy go to:

$200 million milestone achieved!
The Crusade celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2003 and achieved a cumulative total of $100 million. Just 10 years later, in its 60th year, the Crusade had raised $150 million.
June 6, 2021 topped them all. At the conclusion of the 68th annual WHAS Crusade for Children, the final tote board read $5.1 million. Since 1954, the Crusade has now raised a cumulative total of $200 million.
In an emotional weekend, honoring many fallen firefighters, the people of Kentuckiana responded.
From the News-Enterprise in Elizabethtown:
Kudos: Praising positives
June 15, 2021
CRUSADE A BIG WINNER. The manner in which local fire departments and others collect money for the annual WHAS Crusade for Children doesnāt matter: Local residents are going to match the efforts with donations.
More than $131,000 was raised locally for this yearās Crusade for Children.
Fire departments, organizations and businesses have become more and more creative over the years after firefighters were removed from most of the county roadways as a collection site.
Whether itās a fundraising meal, raffle or going to the door of a donor to collect a donation, we make it work in Hardin County every year to support a wonderful cause.
The Crusade has been a big part of the community and the region since 1954 when it was started by WHAS-TV. The effort is designed to raise money for agĀenĀcies, schools and hospitals that benefit children with special needs.

Three things to know about WHAS Crusade For Children:
- 100% of each donation to the WHAS Crusade for Children helps children with special needs.
- Through the Crusade, millions of children’s lives have changed in Kentucky and Indiana since 1954.
- Right now, Crusade is funding 1 in 3 children thanks to donations.
In its first 67 years, the WHAS Crusade for Children has raised more than $195 million. Thanks to generous contributions of goods and services, the WHAS Crusade is able to return 100% of all donations to organizations that make life better for children with special needs in all 120 Kentucky counties and 50 southern Indiana counties. Fire departments raise more than 50 percent of the money each year by staging road blocks and other events.
More about this year’s design
Fire departments have gone above and beyond for the WHAS Crusade for Children to help children with special needs in Kentucky and Southern Indiana in the midst of a pandemic. This year we honor firefighters for their service and sacrifice with a special design by Lonnie Walker of Primo Graphics.
The design includes two crossed axes with a firefighter helmet and badge that encompasses the Crusade’s logo. It will be featured on this year’s t-shirts and collectors pins, which will be available for purchase in the coming weeks.
The 68th WHAS Crusade for Children is June 5-6, 2021. Be sure to follow our WHAS Crusade for Children Facebook page, and stay tuned for more details. 100% for the kids! #WHASCrusade

The 67thĀ WHAS Crusade for Children will be rescheduled from June 6-7, 2020 to August 8-9, 2020. Communities throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana are a key part of the success of the WHAS Crusade for Children. Crusade supporters come together each year to help make life better for children with special needs who are among some of the most medically fragile citizens we have in our communities. Due to the impact of social distancing, the decision was made to postpone the annual radio/telethon.
āThe community is such an important part of the WHAS Crusade for Children. With this in mind, we made the decision to reschedule Crusade 67 for August 8 and 9. In these unprecedented times, we remain committed to the health and safety of the children we serve.Ā It is our hope that rescheduling the telethon will provide additional time for our dedicated firefighters and community partners, who are crucial to our success,āĀ said Dawn Lee, President & CEO of the WHAS Crusade for Children.
Firefighters lead the way
Fire departments across Kentucky and southern Indiana raise nearly 60 percent of the Crusade donations each year by staging roadblocks and hosting other events. Fundraising events can be found on WHASCrusade.org/events.
